in the murder-suicide case of nfl player jovan belcher. police tell "the kansas city star" that belcher's mother saw him kiss his girlfriend on the forehead saying he was sorry. seconds after he shot her on saturday. he also kissed his baby daughter and apologized to his own mother. >> kansas city police say belcher legally owned the handgun that he used to kill kasandra perkins and then himself there. are no official numbers, but some players and coaches say 50% to 90% of nfl players own guns. jim axelrod looks at why athletes and firearms go together so often. >> i'm 21 years old, i have a lot of money in one pocket and a gun in the other pocket and i'm saying please leave me alone. >> reporter: this is former pro football player marcellus wiley, a gun control advocate speaking three years ago at the brady center about why he used to carry a gun. >> i remember taking the same gun to the nightclubs, to the restaurants where i would go eat. not to be a villain, but just really in a warped sense of mind, an identity trying to protect myself. >> reporter: unfortunate
belcher kissed her on the forward and told her he was sorry. after he shot her nine times. that's from the reporting of the kansas city star newspaper. police have confirmed it to fox news. it would all end moments later in the parking lot of the chief's stadium with the team's general manager, head coach and defensive coordinator standing there helpless. the star reports that he said i killed her. and asked they take care of his three-month-old daughter and said, guys, i have to do this. the 25-year-old reportedly kneeled and made the sign of the cross and shot himself in the head. that cross sign probably did not help. we are learn new details of the problems he was dealing with before all of this happened. not to put an excuse on anything but here is trace gallagher. the chiefs new there was trouble in the relationship. >>trace: in fact, they were providing jovan belcher with couples counseling but right before he killed himself he told the chiefs general manager the counseling was not enough. we are also now learning that hours before the shooting, kasandra came home from a concert
not far from where i'm standing. shortly before 8:00 this morning, gunfire erupted at this kansas city suburban home. >> when we arrived, a lady came out and said her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend several times inside the residence. we went in the residence. she was taken to the local hospital where she died a short time later. >> reporter: just ten minutes later at arrowhead stadium a man with a gun. >> we got a call at the arrowhead stadium to the practice facility in regard to a person who was in the parking lot armed with a handgun. when the officers pulled up they actually observed a black male who had a gun to his head and was talking to a couple coaches. >> reporter: then shots rang out. >> officers pulled up and began to park and that is when they heard the gunshot. it appears the individual took his own life. >> reporter: police identified the shooter as jovan belcher a linebacker with the kansas city chiefs. the victim is identified as his 22-year-old girlfriend kasandra perkins, the mother of his 3-month-old child. >> we heard they had been arguing in the past as f

. >> ben farmer in afghanistan. thank you. >>> just seven hours from now, the kansas city chiefs will play the carolina panther, the team deciding not to reschedule the game after linebacker jovan belcher shot his girlfriend in front of her mother and then driving to the training facility where he shot himself in front of the coach and general manager. casey wine is in kansas city for us this morning. local media report the two had a fight after a concert friday night. what do you know about that? >> reporter: we don't know much about the concert that the kansas city star is reporting about. we do know police say there was some sort of argument either late friday night or early saturday morning before this tragic -- these two tragic shootings happened. we spoke last night with a next door neighbor of jovan belcher and of his girlfriend. they had been living in that house for about a year, the neighbor told us. the neighbor did not want us to use his name. he said that the two appeared to have been getting along very, very well. they had a baby just three months ago, born on september 11th.

to proceed with the case at this time. >> reporter: the 70-year-old was arrested in new york city in august, just as she arrived to work at the u.s. open as a line judge. her husband alan goodman was found dead in the couple's california home in april. she told police he fell down the stairs. prosecutors alleged goodman used the coffee mug to bludgeon him and stabbed him with the broken pieces. she pleaded not guilty. her attorney claims police botched the investigation and says her client's dna was not found on the coffee mug. >> this is a wonderful woman whose name was tarnished all over this country. >> reporter: family and friends also came to goodman's defense, including her daughter. >> my mother did not do this. she is not capable physically or emotionally to do something like this. >> reporter: prosecutors say they are still investigating the case and could refile charges if they find new evidence. >> sounds to me like the forensics didn't match up, they're going to let her go, and unless somebody comes forward and says i was there and saw her kill him, then the investigation is goi

city newsroom. >> reporter: jack mccullough was 17 when the 7-year-old girl disappeared and later found dead. mccullough is 73 years old and he was just convicted in her death this year. prosecutors say back in 1957 the teenage mccullough approached maria and other girl. when the other girl left, dragging maria into an alley choked her with a wire and stabbed her in the throat and chess. he dumped her body in a wooded area 100 miles away. she was found four months later. the case was unsolved for decades. mccullough's half-sister told police that her mother incriminated mccullough before her death. he was arrested tried and convicted. he claims he has an alibi at the time of maria's death. he claims he was traveling to chicago for a medical exam before joining the air force. his half-sister says he is evil and should pend spend the rest of his life behind bars. he faces a maximum life in prison. mccullough did not testify during the trial but will have a chance to speak in court. jon: he has been free for 55 years since the time occurred. >> reporter: incredible. talk about a cold case.
